Discovering the Hidden Beauty of Mirveti Waterfall Near Batumi

I would like to take some time out on this blog and start to talk about some of the places I have been exploring lately. There is so much to talk about and to reminisce about in life, and some of those things that bring beauty and joy to life is travel. Going out and seeing new things is something that is very exciting to me. Therefore, I am going to start including some journal entries of my travels here.

If you're spending some time in Batumi and want to get away from the city for a day to experience nature, look no further than Mirveti Waterfall. This magical little spot is tucked away in the hills above Georgia’s Black Sea coast. It’s a little bit off the beaten path, but that’s part of the adventure, and the reward of being out in nature is absolutely worth it.

Getting to the Mirveti Waterfall from Batumi

We decided to take a taxi from Batumi to the waterfall, which was the easiest option since marshrutkas (shared minibuses) don’t run regularly to that area (I read they go every hour or two, but didn't see any). The drive itself was peaceful and beautiful, taking us through winding mountain roads, small rural villages, and lush green hills. It felt like we were gradually peeling back the layers of modern life and entering a quieter, more timeless world. The taxi driver stopped at a restaurant overlooking the river where we could stretch our legs and take in the views.

Eventually, the road narrowed, and there was a pullout to a very small suspension bridge. We thought it was a pedestrian bridge at first, but vehicles can fit on it going one way. This is where the real charm begins. As you cross this narrow bridge, suspended above a gently flowing river, you take in the view of trees on all sides and the lush green hills rising ever upward. It’s the kind of place that instantly calms your spirit. I immediately loved it!

On the other side, we followed a rustic country road for about 10–15 minutes, walking past tiny homes, with farmland, chickens in the yard, and charming little restaurants offering local Georgian dishes. If you’re hungry, it’s worth stopping in for a meal after your walk (it's not quite a hike).

The Waterfall: A Peaceful Escape

The Mirveti Waterfall itself is small, but serene and tucked into the greenery like a well-kept secret. The sound of the water hitting the rocks is peaceful, and the surrounding moss-covered stones and cool shade make it a perfect spot to relax. It's not overly crowded either. When we went, only a few other people were there, snapping photos or simply soaking in the atmosphere. You can even walk right up to the base of the waterfall, and if it's hot, a splash of the cold water is incredibly refreshing. There is no charge to visit, so save your money for one of the lovely cafes that are close by.

Getting Back: A Hitchhiking Surprise

Getting there was easy. Getting back, however, turned into an unexpected little adventure. There were no taxis available in the area when we were ready to leave, and since we were in a rural village, hailing one wasn't an option either.

We decided to start walking along the main road by the river, hoping we’d reach a nearby town with transport options. The road was quiet, lined with tall trees and rushing water below. After walking for maybe 15–20 minutes in the hot sun, a young Georgian man pulled over in his car and offered us a ride. He seemed genuinely happy to help and drove us all the way back to Batumi.

This spontaneous moment of hospitality reminded me why I love traveling in Georgia. The people are warm and generous, and there's an unspoken trust in the air that still exists in places not yet consumed by mass tourism.

Tips for Visiting Mirveti Waterfall

  • Getting there: Take a taxi or hire a driver from Batumi. It’s not expensive, especially if you split the cost with a group.

  • Footwear: Wear good walking shoes or sandals that can handle a bit of mud and uneven paths.

  • Bring cash: There aren’t any ATMs or card machines in the area. Bring cash if you plan to eat at one of the local restaurants.

  • Time your visit: Go early in the day to avoid crowds and enjoy the peaceful setting.

  • Be flexible: Don’t rely on finding a taxi back right away. Either pre-arrange a return ride, or be ready for a bit of a hike (or a bit of unexpected adventure).

Final Thoughts

Mirveti Waterfall is worth a visit, especially if you are looking for a place in nature where you can get a taste of what rural living in Georgia is like.

Between the gorgeous natural surroundings, the local hospitality, and the peaceful atmosphere, it was one of our favorite off-the-beaten-path excursions near Batumi. If you're looking for a taste of real Georgia, wild, welcoming, and wonderfully unpredictable, Mirveti should be on your list.
